SWAMINARAYAN TEMPLE KHICHDI RECIPE

Here is the Divine and Delicious BAPS Swaminarayan Temple Khichdi Recipe for you!!

Swaminarayan Temple style Khichdi prasad is a little spicy mixed vegetable Gujarati khichdi prepared without onion and garlic. It is also called Masala Khichdi or Vaghareli Khichdi. This satvik khichadi is served along with Gujarati kadhi. The recipe of Swaminarayan temple Khichdi is very elaborate which makes it very flavorful without being spicy.

SWAMINARAYAN TEMPLE KHICHDI – STEP BY STEP RECIPE

  1. Take 1 cup of Raw Rice like sona masoori rice, ambemohar rice or any other variety of raw rice, and 1/2 cup of Arhar dal or Toor dal in a bowl. Wash the rice and dal with sufficient water and then discard the water. Repeat this process for 3 to 4 times.

After washing the rice and dal thoroughly, keep the rice and dal soaked in water for 30 minutes.

2. Heat 2 tbsp of Oil in a earthenware or clay pot. You may use any other cooking pot or even pressure cooker. Clay pots render a very divine aroma hence I prefer cooking prasadam in clay pot.

Once the Oil is smoking hot, add the below mentioned ingredients :

  • 1 tsp of Mustard Seeds
  • 2 to 3 Dry Red Chillies. Fry till the Chillies turn brown
  • 3 Cinnamon Sticks 1 inch each
  • 3 Cloves (Laung)
  • 1/4th cup of raw Peanuts. Fry the peanuts for few minutes
  • Few Curry Leaves

Fry the tempering for few seconds more.

3. Next, add 1 tbsp of Ginger and Green Chillies paste and fry till the raw smell of Ginger is gone.

4. Add the rice and dal along with the water in which it was soaked. In addition to it, add 4 cups of water to cook the rice and dal. Add 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder and salt as per taste. Give a nice stir to mix everything and bring it to a full boil. Cook till rice and dal are 50% boiled.

5. When the rice and dal is almost half cooked then add the below vegetables :

  • 1/2 cup of chopped Cabbage
  • 1 Carrot, cut into small cubes
  • 1/4th cup of Green Peas
  • 1 Potato cut into cubes. Keep the skin of the Potato

Mix the vegetables with the Khichdi and cook on medium flame.

6. After cooking the khichdi for 30 minutes, add the below mentioned spices :

  • 1 tsp of Kashmiri Red Chilly Powder
  • 1 tsp of Cumin Powder
  • 1 tbsp of Sambar Powder

Mix the spices with the khichdi and cook for another 10 minutes. Keep stirring the khichdi intermittently so that khichdi does not stick to the bottom of the pan.

7. When the Khichdi is completely cooked, add the below ingredients for the final touch :

  • 1 tbsp of Cow Ghee
  • a small cube of Jaggery to balance the flavours
  • 2 tsp of freshly squeezed Lemon juice
  • a handful of chopped Coriander Leaves

Mix all these ingredients with the Khichdi and keep it covered for 5 minutes before serving.

Swaminarayan Temple style Khichdi is ready. It is divinely delicious. Enjoy it with Gujarati Kadhi.

Jai Swaminarayan !!
