Dahi Pakhala is one of the daily chappan bhog (56 Bhog) offered to Lord Jagannath temple in Puri Dham in Odisha. Dahi Pakhala is cooked rice soaked in water for few hours and then mixed with curd and aromatic spices. This offered to the trinity deities Lord Jagannath, Lord Balaram and Maa Subhadra in the Madhyanna Dhupa that is the daily worship rituals performed during afternoon and then offering of bhoga (food) to the deities.
DAHI PAKHALA MAHAPRASAD OF JAGANNATH PURI (STEP BY STEP RECIPE)
- First, we will prepare a special spice powder for the pakhala. Dry roast together 1 tsp each of cumin seeds and black peppercorns till these light brown in color and aromatic. Take these spices out and cool these completely. Crush together the roasted cumin and black pepper together into a coarse powder. The texture of the spice powder is shown in the image.
2. In a mixing bowl, take 2 cups of cooked rice and add the following ingredients one by one :
- 200 gms of Yogurt or Curd
- Rock Salt as per taste
- 1/2 tbsp of grated Ginger
- 2 tbsp of chopped Coriander Leaves
- the prepared Spice Powder in step 1
Mix all the ingredients with the rice very nicely.
3. Heat 1 tbsp of cow ghee (clarified butter made from cow milk) in tempering pan and add 1 tsp of mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds starts to splutter, pour the tempering on the dahi pakhala. Give a nice mix and the divine Dahi Pakhala (56 bhog) of lord Jagannath Puri temple is ready.
Serve a portion of the dahi pakhala in a small clay pot, place a tulsi leaf and offer to the Lord Jagannath.
